信仰 · 伝承Venerated by the historic churches as the instrument of the Lord's Passion. Fragments of the 'True Cross' trace to the 4th-century tradition of St Helena.
作品ではIn the work it is drawn from Mary's point of view through the grain, the weight and the shadow of the wood. The authenticity of relic fragments is never made a theme.
役割The centre of the Passion and of salvation. The key to the scene where Mary stands beneath the cross (John 19). The vertical axis of the whole work.

Holy Chalice Santo Calice ／ Holy Grail ／ 新約
信仰 · 伝承The cup the Lord used at the Last Supper. The historic churches keep it in memory as the institution of the Eucharist.
作品ではThe medieval 'Grail quest' legends are kept apart as creative material. The work respects that Mary was not present in the room and draws it as report and meditation.
役割The cup of the Last Supper = the new covenant. A bridge between the Eucharist and the Ark of the Covenant.

Holy Shroud Sacra Sindone ／ Holy Shroud ／ 新約
信仰 · 伝承The linen that wrapped the Lord's body. Regarding the Shroud of Turin the Church has defined no dogma of authenticity; it is honoured as an object of devotion.
作品ではIn the work the whiteness, the folds and the light of the cloth are drawn as the memory of Mary's hands. Scientific disputes over authenticity are not treated.
役割The silence between burial and resurrection. The cloth in which a mother wraps her son's body. The work's symbol of 'night'.

Ark of the Covenant Arca dell'Alleanza ／ Ark of the Covenant ／ 旧約
信仰 · 伝承The chest holding the tablets of the Law, placed in the tabernacle and the temple as the sign of God's presence. The Litany of Loreto gives Mary the title 'Ark of the Covenant'.
作品ではThe work pairs the scene of the Ark carried before David (2 Samuel 6) with the Visitation (Luke 1:39-56). Adventure tales about the Ark's whereabouts are not treated.
役割The spine joining Old and New Testament. The chest that carried the presence of God. In church tradition Mary is called the 'Ark of the New Covenant' (Foederis Arca), the key linking the protagonist directly to the Old Testament.
