Our Tradition
Rooted in the Catholic Tradition
IHS Bethlehem Church was explicitly founded within the tradition of Catholic faith.
Positioned within the living stream of Christian thought and practice extending
from the Apostles to the present day, it inherits the richness of sacramental life,
the depth of theological inquiry, and the breadth of charitable activity.
We are particularly influenced by Saint Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises.
This tradition — emphasizing discernment, contemplation in action, and the apostolic
mission of finding God in all things — teaches that art, intellect, and service
are not separate from prayer, but extensions of it.
We also look to the great heritage of sacred art: Michelangelo, who carved theology
into marble; William Blake, who wrote theology in poetry and paint; and the
countless craftsmen who built cathedrals not as monuments to human achievement,
but as prayers in stone, glass, and light.
IHS Bethlehem Church stands within this tradition and endeavors to continue it
in the language and media of the twenty-first century. Comics, music, and digital
media are the legitimate heirs of two thousand years of sacred artistic tradition.
Foundations of Faith
On God
We profess one God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — Creator and Redeemer of all things.
On the Church
We are part of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, called to serve her mission in the world.
On Human Dignity
Every person is made in the image of God and possesses inviolable dignity from conception to natural death.
On Art
Beauty is one of the names of God. Art ordered toward truth is participation in the creative love of the Creator.
On Peace
We are devoted to the reconciliation of humanity with God, with one another, and with creation.
